There’s something about a dark, rainy autumn evening that makes you crave comfort food. We visited this Japanese restaurant shortly after the clocks went back, and stepping inside was just the escape we were looking for; warm, and cosy but with an upmarket feel.

Although the menu is primarily Japanese, there are a handful of other Asian-inspired dishes too. Sushi lovers are well catered for, with an impressive selection of rolls, nigiri and speciality creations, but on such a cold evening we found ourselves drawn to the warmer dishes instead.

To start, we shared the Takoyaki (octopus balls) drizzled with Okonomi sauce and the Tori Karaage, crispy fried chicken served with spicy mayonnaise. Both disappeared quickly. If you’re dining with friends and struggle to choose, there’s also a tapas-style sharing platter for two, which lets you sample a variety of starters.

As a ramen enthusiast, choosing a main course was easy. I opted for the Tempura Miso Ramen, which came with crispy prawns served separately to keep them wonderfully crunchy. The peanut and miso broth was rich, creamy and incredibly moreish. It was exactly the kind of bowl you want to curl up with on a cold autumn night.

My friend ordered the Korean Beef Bulgogi, and the portion size was impressive. The tender beef and rice arrived separately, and there was enough food to feed two. Despite her best efforts, she couldn’t quite finish it all.

There were plenty of other tempting dishes on the menu that caught my eye, including the Japanese Wagyu beef (which needs to be pre-ordered), duck dishes and a Japanese or Thai style curry. The sushi selection looked equally tempting, with options such as truffle crab rolls, spicy salmon rolls and a wide range of nigiri.

By the end of the meal we were far too full to even consider dessert, although the mango crème brûlée is already on my list for next time.

If you’re looking for a cosy spot for a date night, dinner with friends, or simply a warming bowl of ramen on a rainy Vorarlberg evening, this restaurant is definitely worth adding to your list.

This riverside steakhouse brings a fresh, modern coolness to fine dining. I had originally booked a table for a no‑kids date night, but plans changed at the last minute and we ended up taking one of our daughters with us. It’s not somewhere I would usually take young children, yet they were completely welcoming and happy for her to join us — which immediately set the tone for a relaxed evening.

Hidden away in the Ganahl Areal, the restaurant feels like a little escape. We were seated right by the window, overlooking the river and the hillside. The atmosphere is upmarket but not pretentious — stylish, calm, and genuinely inviting.

The bar sits right in the centre of the room, adding to the lively yet still elegant vibe.

This is definitely a more premium steakhouse, and the prices reflect that, but the food absolutely justifies it. My husband started with an orange‑coconut curry soup topped with wasabi foam. I’m not usually a fan of spicy dishes, yet this soup was packed with flavour and had just the right amount of heat.

For my main, I chose the lamb — something I rarely get to enjoy here in Vorarlberg, so it felt like a real treat. My husband went for a ribeye steak, and our daughter was spoiled with spinach and ricotta ravioli in truffle oil and sage butter. A far cry from the usual chicken nuggets and chips from a kids’ menu. Each main comes with your choice of sauce and side (chips, potatoes, polenta, vegetables, etc.).

When the dishes arrived, the presentation was beautiful, and the taste matched it. My lamb was perfectly pink, and the polenta was so creamy I could have happily eaten a whole bowl of it. The portion sizes were generous but not overwhelming, and of course you can choose the size of your steak. You could really taste the quality of the meat in Roger’s ribeye, and it was cooked exactly how he wanted it.

Our daughter polished off her pasta without hesitation and even tried some of our meat — both given a very enthusiastic thumbs‑up.

For dessert, we couldn’t decide, so we shared the surprise dessert variation. My daughter’s eyes lit up when it arrived (mine did too). Fudgy, nutty chocolate brownies, crème brûlée, chocolate mousse, berry sorbet, and more. Every part of it was delicious, and needless to say, the plate returned to the kitchen completely clean.

I think our daughter may now have a taste for fine dining — and honestly, I can’t blame her. The food was outstanding, the atmosphere relaxed, the location beautiful, and the service fantastic. It’s not somewhere you’d visit every week, but for a special occasion, it absolutely deserves a place on your list.

Michaela & Jürgen Gehrmann invite you into their home to share their passion for Italian cuisine.  Mulino (the Italian word for mill) is set in a historical grain mill in Düns and is not your normal restaurant experience. Open every first and last Friday and Saturday of the month and serving a set four-course menu that you will find out just a few days before your reservation, Mulino is not for the place for a quick last-minute dinner or for the culinary unadventurous. On one Saturday night after I had worked all day, I was so thankful that Roger had booked us a table at Marktplatz so I didn’t have to think about cooking. I was even more thankful after we tried their food. It was just what I needed after a long day and the glass of wine also didn’t hurt. (more…)
