Waldschenke Mexikanisches Steakhaus

Sigmarszell

Tucked away in the woods, just a stones throw over the German border you will find Waldschenke, a Mexican steakhouse. This hidden gem hits all the right spots in terms of food, location and atmosphere. As you round the corner and into the car park, the trees part ways and you are greeted by a beautiful old traditional guesthouse set within the most serene surroundings. They do have a few traditional classics on the menu such as Rostbraten, Schnitzel and Grillteller, but this restaurant is most definitely the go to place, for yes, you guessed it, a good Mexican feast or a succulent steak.

As you cross the threshold, the peaceful surroundings make way for a colourful, vibrate and bustling restaurant with sombreros on the wall and Cacti throughout. The cosy set of rooms however treats you to all of the warmth of a guesthouse, whilst their menu treats you to the full flavour of mexican food.

Their starter sharing platter is a definite winner, comprising of Jalapeno peppers, onion rings, prawns, corn on the cobb, meatballs, plus some nachos in case all of that was not enough. But be careful not to go too hard too soon, as their mains are just as mouthwatering and hearty.

We have visited numerous times and each time we’ve sampled something different. I can highly recommend their Burritos, which are filled to the brim with your choice of fillings like chicken, beef, or vegetables, and topped up with rice, beans, cheese, sour cream and salad.

Their Fajitas are served sizzling to your seat, and if your feeling hungry or simply can’t decide what flavour to go with, why not go the whole hog and choose the beef, chicken and prawn. Their quesadillas are also one of my favourites with crispy tortillas, and a cheesy filling, just the right size to fill you up.

A mexican “Steakhouse” would not be complete without a good steak. Choose from a selection of cuts and sizes, or if you are feeling adventerous why not try something a bit more exotic like crocodile or ostrich meat.

Their BBQ specials (ribs, chicken wings etc.) are the way to go if you don’t mind getting your hands, and most likely your face and clothes, messy, and if that wasn’t enough selection to keep you coming back every weekend, then they also have burgers to tempt you.

Make sure you at least try to keep some room for dessert as you can finish the night off with ice cream from Kolibri.

It is a bustling restaurant, and so on a Friday and Saturday it is worth making a booking to ensure that you do not miss out on this Mexican delight.

Since having children, we’ve also been for a few visits — their garden has a sandpit and play area in summer, perfect for keeping little ones busy while you relax.
