O’Ricks Streetfood

At Passage 22 in Rankweil fast food is in no short supply with the likes of McDonalds and Manga in the vicinity, but I made the trip out to check out O’Ricks Streetfood for their new take on the classic kebab shop.

Opened earlier in 2017 they abide by the motto “life is too short for a bad kebab”. I will firstly like to admit that I do not visit kebab shops that often, not since my time at university in England. I would also like to point out that the kebabs here in Vorarlberg seem to be of far better quality than what we used to eat, but the trips were normally undertaken in a state of intoxication and so my analysis may be a little off.

However, the stereotype of a dodgy and greasy kebab is now being challenged by O’Ricks and I wanted to see if they could convert me.

I need to clarify that my visit took place in the middle of the afternoon, stone cold sober, which I didn’t think could actually happen when visiting a kebab shop.

I noticed instantly the absence of an overwhelming greasy smell greeting you as you walk in the door. All of their meat and ingredients are on display and looked fresh and edible and not dripping in fat.

You pick up an ordering sheet (which granted may not be a good idea at your standard kebab shop after a few drinks), and build your perfect kebab. What I really love is that this place caters for everyone, even those looking for a healthier option, as you can opt for a low carb salad or even wholewheat bread as the base of your kebab.

So you first off choose your base, either bread, a wrap, a box or plate (with your choice of rice, salad or hummus). Then you add the main attraction of chicken, veal or falafel.

They have a huge range of free toppings for you to add including:

• Salad mix

• Rocket

• Corn

• Jalapenos

• Pepperoni

• Chickpeas

• Beetroot

• Olives

Then finally choose your sauce; classic yoghurt, spicy chilli or light olive oil and pomegranate syrup. If that is not enough you can always add on a few extras like hummus, tzatziki, grilled vegetables or halloumi or a full side serving of chips, sweet potato fries (my absolute favourite and anywhere with these on the menu gets my vote :()), or falafel with hummus to name a few.

I must have stood with my pen and ordering sheet for a good ten minutes deciding what to sample. There were way too many combinations that I wanted to try. In the end, I landed on a falafel plate with salad and hummus, with extra chickpeas for good measure. I really wanted to add on sweet potato fries, but I just didn’t think I could eat it all and I would have been right, my plate was full to the brim when it was ready and I struggled to eat it all, but it was delicious and hands down the best ‘kebab’ I have ever eaten. I will definitely be back to order a more traditional kebab, in a wrap, with all of the trimmings.

So put down your Big Mac and walk away, straight into O’Ricks. After a few drinks or sober you will thank me later.
